«For its part, the Western mass media repeated in full the elaborate lies of Soviet propaganda – including the propagation of an image of myself as a cruel dictator of Georgia, a kind of Saddam Hussein of the Caucasus, who was engaged in the outright suppression of all personal freedoms, the arrest of political opponents, the wholesale violation of human rights, the oppression of national minorities, and the waging of ‘fascist war’ against them under the slogan ‘Georgia for the Georgians‘.»

Like most nationalists, the new Georgian leaders in 1989-91 considered minorities to be a headache. The first Georgian president, Zviad Gamsakhurdia, claimed to be a democrat, but his beliefs were closest to “Georgia for the Georgians.”…

…The new government of Eduard Shevardnadze branded Gamsakhurdia’s movement as “parochial fascism“…

Rather than expand on theoretical points, I simply begin by assuming that nationalism means the existence of a political project of representing and organizing a group calling itself a nation. It is based on the belief that each nation should have one political unit, Georgia for Georgians, Armenia for Armenians, and so on.

RFE/RL (07.09.2000) / HRWF International Secretariat (08.09.2000) – Website: http://www.hrwf.net – Email: info@hrwf.net – Georgians have traditionally prided themselves on their tolerance towards people of other races and other creeds. But they have not always lived up to that perception of themselves. In the late 1980s Zviad Gamsakhurdia promulgated a vision of “Georgia for Georgians” that was enthusiastically espoused by his supporters and impelled many non-Georgians to flee the republic in fear or reprisals or retribution. More recently, religious minorities, in particular Jehovah’s Witnesses, have been the target of violence.

ამავე სიყალბესა და ცილისწამებას იმეორებს საქართველოში ბაზირებული ძირგამომთხრელი ცენტრი „ფონდი ღია საზოგადოება – საქართველო“:
The stage was set for an outbreak of war in both Abkhazia and South Ossetia. The nationalist policies of President Zviad Gamsakhurdia, elected in 1990, severely alienated the non-Georgian populations of Georgia. A former dissident who had spent time in Soviet prison for his nationalist zeal, the new leader promoted a policy of “Georgia for Georgians” which aimed to snuff out autonomous ethnic power within Georgia’s borders (Anchabadze 1998; Chirikba 1998; Nodia 1997 {მოურავი – მაგალითი, რომ ცილისწამების ავტორად, წყაროდ ნოდიას 1997 წელს გამოცემული „ნაშრომია“ მოხსწნებული} ). Gamsakhurdia was intent on creating a Georgian nation-state based on the Georgian ethnicity, prying it free once and for all from the Russo-Soviet orbit (4) .

In 1991 Zviad Gamsakhurdia, the first president of independent Georgia, sparked separatism toward national minorities in the republic with his “hosts and guests” doctrine. Posters in the country hailed “Georgia for Georgians.” Gamsakhurdia, whose policy mainly concentrated on cleansing the country from “non-Georgians”, was ousted in 1993.

The ideologists of Georgian neo-Nazism and the leaders оf bandit unit through their fiendish actions were trying to saw the seeds fear among the Ossetians, to force the unruly flee the South Ossetia, the shy- to take Georgia surnames, to refuse the true ethnic membership and become “georgians”. Thus, the attempt was made to “clean” Georgia from the “alien” element, assimilate all non Georgians, and bring to life the fascist slogan of Zviad Gamsakhurdia: “Georgia for Georgians!” All the might of the army of the Georgian bandits was aimed again the small in number population оf South Ossetia, all the арргоаches to Tshinval the capital of the republic, in the South, the West and the East were blocked by the armed to the teeth supporters of Z. The son of a prominent Georgian writer, Gamsakhurdia began his anti-Communist dissident activities in the 1950s. In the late 1980s he became leader of the independence movement. After becoming Chairman of the parliament he was elected president in May 1990 with eighty-six per cent of the vote. Adopting the slogan ‘Georgia for Georgians’ he utilized the ethnic question to increase his popularity, but in promoting majority rights antagonized relations with minorities, threatening their cultural and political security and thereby helping to bring about the war in South Ossetia.

However: Georgia is a country overflowing with minority groups: Armenians, Ossetians, Abhazians, and many many others. Gamsakhurdia saw them as second-class citizens, and began a program of oppression and discrimination against them. His motto was “Georgia for Georgians“. All this did was fill people with hate. You can’t run a government efficiently on hate.

Here’s a quote about Gamsakhurdia from Michael Dobbs’ great book Down with Big Brother:

“Georgia is a unitary independent state, and therefore there can be no concessions to the separatists in Abhazia or southern Ossetia,” [Gamsakhurdia] told the meeting outside the parliament building. “The representatives of all other nations are merely guests on Georgian land, who can be shown the door at any time by their hosts.”

In the years of perestroika and glasnost, Georgian nationalism reached itsextreme form. The idea whereby the Georgians are the “hosts” and other ethnicgroups are the “guests” (often “ungrateful” because they had no right to self-determination on the territory that historically “belonged” to Georgians) waspropagated through the media and academic publications. One of the central Georgian newspapers, for example, went as far as publishing an article that sug-gested that restrictions be put on non-Georgian families to have no more than twochildren, because the birth rate among Georgians was allegedly the lowest at thattime. The slogan “Abkhazia is Georgia” was surpassed in popularity only by theslogan “Georgia for Georgians.” Frequently, at mass rallies, fighters for Georgia’sindependence demanded the abolition of Abkhazia’s and South Ossetia’sautonomous status. Zviad Gamsakhurdia, who was soon to become the presidentof Georgia, disseminated an address to the West Georgians that, in essence, wasa plan to assimilate or oust Abkhazians from their land.

When the Soviet Union collapsed, the nationalist Gamsakhurdia regime in Tblisi made a concerted effort to stamp out ethnic differences and create a “Georgia for Georgians.”
